I had the recent fortune of contributing to an article on Artsy.net, “Financial Advice for Artists from Four Experts”. I traditionally find interviews as exciting as potentially nerve-racking, my having endured a fair share of wild misquotes. I found the results of this article, however, a pleasant surprise.
The piece is a thoughtful collection of advice from art professionals, proffering guidance on responsible financial management of an art practice. Alexxa Gotthardt did a notable job in interweaving the various voices into a solid narrative addressing typical fiscal queries and quagmires.
One of its contributors, Christina Empedocles, an amazing artist herself, produces an artist financial advice blog, sm-artly. I have had the pleasure of working with Ms. Empedocles, featuring her work in a recent installment of fresh stART, and was impressed not only with her incredible talent but also with her generous smarts in the oft-cumbersome world of finances.
I know only too well the artist’s struggle (emotional and real) of money and an art practice. I hope the above sheds some light and/or provides a bit of solace.
